CIEL Participates in an International Anti-Corruption Conference
October 2008
CIEL will participate in the 13th International Anti-Corruption Conference
in Athens (http://www.13iacc.org/),
Greece from October 30th until November 2nd, 2008. The International Anti-Corruption
Conference (IACC) brings together practitioners and academics to combat
corruption and fraud globally. The theme of this year's conference is Global Transparency: Fighting Corruption for a Sustainable Future.
CIEL will host a workshop entitled Shedding Light onto Investment Arbitration,
(http://www.13iacc.org/en/IACC_Workshops/Workshop_4.6).
CIEL's workshop will explore the linkages between investment arbitration
and corruption, and address problems related to the lack of transparency
in international investment arbitration. The session will discuss how
lifting the veil of secrecy would help expose and thus fight corruption
in international investment, and will strategize on ways to introduce
transparency and participation into international investment dispute settlement.
CIEL's workshop will be held on November 1st, from 11.00am until 1.00pm,
in room MC 3.4 of the Megaron Moussikis in Athens, Greece.
CIEL's workshop will be moderated by Sofia Plagakis of CIEL. Panelists
include: Jacob Werksman, Program Director, Institutions and Governance
Program, World Resources Institute; Nathalie Bernasconi-Osterwalder, Managing
Attorney, Geneva, CIEL; Lucinda Low, Partner, Steptoe & Johnson LLP;
and Peter Eigen, Founder and Chairman of the Advisory Committee of Transparency
International.
CIEL has consistently advocated for transparency and accountability as
essential elements of international dispute settlement.
