CIEL participated in a conference entitled, Colombia: The Human Impact of Trade, War, and the Rule of Law, at American University's Washington College of Law on March 27, 2008. CIEL discussed the Environmental Impacts of Trade and the Colombia-U.S. Trade Promotion Agreement in a panel on trade, economics, law and politics.
The conference, which was part of the Washington College of Law's Founder's
Day Events, was videoconference with the Universidad de los Andes in Bogotá,
Colombia. The purpose was to form a cross-organizational coalition to
plan a day for students, practitioners, and members of the wider community
to learn about some of the complex and often contentious issues confronting
Colombia to provide a lens through which we can also analyze trade, war,
and the rule of law in other contexts.
The conference was cosponsored by the Immigrants' Rights Coalition: Refugee
and Asylum Committee, International Trade Law Society, Latino/a Law Students'
Association, Academy on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law, Business Law
Society, and the Program on Law and Government.
A copy of materials
presented at the panel and the program are available.
