April 15, 2008

CIEL will participate in an event, Murky Waters: Fighting World Bank-financed Water Privatization, How to Challenge World Bank (MIGA) Financed Water Projects, at American University's Washington College of Law on April 15, 2008 from 12.00pm-1.30pm in Room 602. Admission is open to all.

Organized by the Center for Human Rights and Humanitarian Law, CIEL, Take Back the Tap AU, and Food & Water Watch, featured speakers for the event include Cesar Cardenas Ramirez of Observatorio Cuidadano de Servicios Publicos, Augusto Parada Campos, Legal Counsel, Observatorio Cuidadano de Servicios Publicos, and Marcos Orellana of CIEL.

A copy of the flyer and background information for the event is available.

Background:
In 2001, the World Bank gave the Bechtel Corporation a guarantee for its investments in the water system in Guayaquil, Ecuador. After years of mismanagement, including water cut-offs, a Hepatitis A outbreak, and ongoing flooding, the Observatorio Cuidadano de Servicios Publicos has initiated a World Bank investigation into the case.
