Geoengineering Campaign Manager

Mary Church (she/her) is the Geoengineering Campaign Manager in CIEL’s Fossil Economy program, based in the UK. Her work focuses on the increasing threat posed by solar radiation modification, marine geoengineering, and highly speculative large-scale ‘carbon removal’ technologies.

Prior to joining CIEL, Mary was Head of Campaigns at Friends of the Earth Scotland for over a decade. Working with frontline communities she led FoE’s successful campaign to stop fracking. Mary co-founded the Just Transition Partnership, a ground-breaking alliance between environmental groups and trade unions focused on advancing a fair energy transition and the Climate Justice Coalition which brought together UK and global movements to organize around COP26. She also led on environmental rights work at FoES, and incubated the Environmental Rights Centre for Scotland.

Mary studied History at the University of Glasgow as an undergraduate, and has a Masters in Environment and Development from the University of Edinburgh.

Mary sits on the Board of the Environmental Rights Centre for Scotland.
