Charles Slidders

Manager & Senior Attorney, Climate Financial Strategies

Charles Slidders is the Senior Attorney for Financial Strategies in CIEL’s Climate & Energy Program. He is based in Barcelona, Spain. His work is focused on developing effective legal strategies to compel financial actors, such as institutional investors, banks, and insurance companies, to address climate-related economic risk. Charles’s work encourages financial actors and institutions to reduce their support for fossil fuels, mitigate climate change, and adopt conduct consistent with a rapid and equitable transition to a fossil-free future.

Prior to joining CIEL, Charles was a senior counsel in one of New York’s premier complex litigation firms, and he has extensive experience in corporate, securities, and finance litigation. Before relocating to New York, he was a partner in a boutique commercial litigation firm in Melbourne, Australia. Charles began his legal career working with indigenous Australians in remote Western Australia where he was responsible for the management and submission of native title claims and heritage protection for traditional landowners.

Charles is committed to protecting the environment, promoting human rights, and ensuring a just and sustainable society. He has resided in Europe since 2018 and he completed a PhD in international law and human rights at the Universität Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona in 2023, and, in 2019, he completed the European Master’s Program at the European Inter-University Centre for Human Rights and Democratization in Venice, Italy, and Graz, Austria. Charles also has a law degree (with honours) from the University of Melbourne and an LLM from Monash University.

Charles spends his spare time hiking with his pet Beagle, Pepe, in the Catalan mountains, swimming in the sea, and reading.
