BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 30, 2024 — Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL) experts will be available for comment during the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, COP29, November 11 – 22 in Baku.
CIEL experts will monitor and engage in negotiations, particularly at the intersection of climate justice, human rights, and the role of the fossil fuel industry.
Key areas of CIEL’s advocacy and monitoring include:
- Advocating for the urgent scaling up of public climate finance to meet the needs and priorities of climate-vulnerable communities and developing countries;
- Calling for an urgent, equitable, and comprehensive phaseout of all fossil fuels;
- Advancing reparations and accountability for climate harm;
- Exposing dangerous distractions, including carbon markets, offsets, carbon capture, hydrogen, and geoengineering, along with their associated human rights risks;
- Monitoring the protection of civic space, including the rights to freedom of expression and assembly.
