Joie Chowdhury

Senior Attorney, Climate & Energy Program

Joie Chowdhury (she/her) is a Senior Attorney (Climate Litigation and Accountability) for CIEL’s Climate & Energy Program. Among her primary areas of focus, she contributes to CIEL’s work in support of the advisory opinions on climate change that have been requested from several international tribunals – the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS), the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACtHR), and the International Court of Justice (ICJ). 

Before joining CIEL, Joie worked at the International Network for Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ESCR-Net). She first joined their strategic litigation program team, and then established and coordinated their environment & ESCR program with the leadership of network members.  Prior to that, she worked with several organizations and academic institutions on legal research, fact-finding and advocacy in India, the United States, Kosovo and Switzerland, and has taught courses on international human rights law, constitutional law, and climate justice.

Joie has co-led on joint amicus briefs in cases before international and regional bodies, including the United Nations Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR), the European Court of Human Rights, the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.

Joie is a member of the State Bar of New York. She has a Master of Laws (LL.M.) from Columbia Law School, a Master of Arts in International Relations (MALD) from the Fletcher School, Tufts University and a law degree (B.A. LL.B. Hons) from the National University of Juridical Sciences (India).
