CIEL Experts Available to Comment on UN Climate Talks in Bonn

BONN, Germany, May 30, 2024  Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL) experts are in Bonn, Germany, engaging in international climate negotiations during the 60th session of the Subsidiary Bodies (SB60) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) from June 2-13, and available for comment.

The climate talks in Bonn take place against a backdrop of devastating climate chaos and increasing restrictions on freedom of assembly and protest at UN Climate Negotiations. Condemning the ongoing genocide in Gaza, CIEL reminds policymakers that there can be no climate justice without human rights. CIEL joined the call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, an end to illegal occupation and apartheid, and accountability for all who are complicit in war crimes and crimes against humanity.

CIEL experts will be focusing on:

  • The intersection between human rights and climate justice
  • The need for the provision  and urgent scaling up of finance to meet the needs of climate-vulnerable communities and developing countries
  • Remedy for climate harm
  • Dangerous distractions such as carbon offsets and geoengineering, and their human rights risks
  • The need for an urgent, equitable, and full phaseout of all fossil fuels
  • The need to protect the civic space,  including respecting and protecting the rights to freedom of expression and assembly at the UN climate negotiations and by their host countries.

The 29th UNFCCC Climate Summit, COP29, will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan, from November 11 – 22, 2024.
