CIEL is a principal organizer of a workshop on Human Rights and the Environment at the 2003 World Social Forum in Porto Alegre, Brazil

2003 World Social Forum

The Third World Social Forum was held in Porto Alegre, Brazil from January 23 – 28, 2003. Around 100,000 participants from over 176 countries attended. CIEL hosted a workshop on Human Rights and the Environment on January 26 from 9 a.m. to noon.

Environmental and human rights issues are closely linked and often exist simultaneously. Although these links are being increasingly recognized, there is still much work to be done in this field, in order to foster solidarity and help build a movement to address environmental and social justice struggles together. This workshop aimed at providing an overview of the human rights and environmental movement, discussing the issues it encompasses, and exploring strategies and spaces in which to promote human rights and environmental issues.

The session was moderated by Shivani Chaudhry of CIEL, and had the following speakers on the panel:

Jorge Daniel Taillant, Center for Human Rights and Environment (CEDHA), Argentina
Daria Calguire, International Network for Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, USA
Marcos Orellana, CIEL
Ryan Zinn, Global Exchange, Mexico
Shivani Chaudhry, CIEL
