Congressman Menendez Achieves Global Warming Victory in the House of Representatives

May 2001

CIEL worked with the Sierra Club, NRDC and other Climate Action Network members to advise Congressman Menendez as he drafted a House Resolution outlining the need for action to combat global warming. The resolution, co-sponsored by Representatives Lee, Hastings and Faleomaevaga, references findings of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report and calls for the U.S. to provide international leadership and continue its participation in international negotiations with the objective of completing the Kyoto Protocol. The environmental community scored a big victory when the climate amendment passed in the House International Relations Committee! Other members of Congress are now focusing on similar resolutions
on the Senate side. These efforts should go a long way to undoing the damage of the Byrd-Hagel Resolution.
