On February 24-25, CIEL participates in an expert meeting to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the adoption of the United Nations Declaration on the Right to Development, and to examine the progress made to realize this right.
Organized by the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), the meeting, taking place in Berlin, Germany, provides a forum to exchange views on policy and legal issues, as well as the future of the right to development. The goal is to increase public awareness and advocacy on the importance of the right to development.
Presenting in a panel on the significance of the right to development in standard setting, Dr. Marcos Orellana of CIEL explains how the right to development applies in the climate change context. In particular, Dr. Orellana describes how human rights are essential to the development process and to effectively address climate change.
