To head off climate catastrophe, oil and gas production and consumption must decline. The opposite is happening in the Permian Basin, where production has more than quadrupled in the past decade, and is expected to grow aggressively in the coming decade. In partnership with Oil Change International and Earthworks, CIEL is producing a six-part series exploring the ongoing oil, gas, and petrochemical boom in this region.
Permian Climate Bomb is a story of runaway toxic infrastructure, environmental injustice, and climate overshoot. The multimedia experience tracks the Permian Basin’s oil and gas development, impacts, and possible futures. It also explores the climate impact of the Permian boom, the public health, environmental, economic, and social impacts of fracking, the Permian Basin’s link to environmental injustice and petrochemical expansion on the Gulf Coast, and the flow of Permian hydrocarbons to export markets.
